Occupational First Aid Course Overview
Hong Kong SAR Government-Recognized Occupational First Aid Certificate
Overview
With the aim of fostering community protection and respect for life, the Hong Kong Society of Professional Medical Care is dedicated to promoting first aid knowledge and skills through hands-on first aid courses. Between 2006 and 2010 alone, nearly 3,000 first aiders were trained.
On January 2, 2011, the Hong Kong Society of Professional Medical Care received approval from the Hong Kong Labour Department to offer Occupational First Aid Training courses recognized by the Director of the Labour Department and in compliance with the Hong Kong legislation—Occupational Safety and Health Regulation (Cap. 509A), Section 17(2)(b)(iii).
From that date onwards, individuals who have successfully completed the Society’s 30-hour Occupational First Aid Certificate Course and passed the assessment are recognized as having received “First Aid Training” as stipulated under Section 17(2)(b)(iii) of the Occupational Safety and Health Regulation (Cap. 509A) of the Laws of Hong Kong. The certificate is valid for three years.
This course not only meets the requirements of the Hong Kong SAR Government but also fulfills the First Aid Training standards of our Medical Services Division, qualifying participants as certified first aiders.
The Hong Kong Society of Professional Medical Care is committed to serving the public regardless of race, class, or political stance. Our services include providing first aid and on-site emergency medical support for the general public and various organizations, as well as teaching essential skills such as first aid and home care. We are dedicated to promoting and encouraging ambulance and rescue services to save those in distress, suffering, illness, or danger. This embodies our motto: “Medical care and rescue from the heart; assisting those in need and serving the community.”
With the increase in average life expectancy in Hong Kong, the population is gradually aging, and more people are suffering from chronic and degenerative diseases. Individuals with these special care needs often rely on community-based health care services and facilities, such as home care and day care centers. This course is specifically designed for community health workers who care for such individuals, helping them acquire both the theoretical foundation and practical skills required for their roles.
The course equips participants with the knowledge and skills needed to care for discharged patients in a home setting, while also enhancing their communication and interaction with these patients. It covers common illnesses and caregiving techniques, thoroughly preparing participants to serve as home care assistants for discharged patients.

We have offered numerous English first aid training courses for Hong Kong’s ethnic minorities and former Royal Gurkha Regiment veterans, supporting their integration into the community.
First Aid Training
Over the years, the Hong Kong Society of Professional Medical Care has provided first aid services and related training to people of all ethnicities in both Hong Kong and Mainland China. We are committed to promoting our mission—“Medical care and rescue from the heart; assisting those in need and serving the community”—by actively advancing community engagement. Through a variety of first aid courses and activities, we strive to promote first aid knowledge and skills to the public, aiming to protect lives and prevent accidents. We are dedicated to implementing internationally recognized first aid techniques in Hong Kong.
Promoting First Aid
The Hong Kong Society of Professional Medical Care advocates for “Promoting First Aid,” emphasizing the integration of both public accessibility and professionalism. With a professional approach, we disseminate first aid knowledge across different social strata, age groups, vulnerable communities, and ethnic minorities, serving anyone in the public who wishes to learn about first aid. In addition, we provide occupational safety and health training for various schools, companies, and organizations, offering a wide range of first aid courses in different formats, such as CPR certificate courses, basic and occupational first aid courses, to meet the needs of people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds.
First Aid Legacy
As the Society continues to expand its Scope of Services, the number of new members and volunteers has also been on the rise. Consequently, there has been an increase in the provision of First Aid Training for our members and volunteers. To meet this demand, we offer high-quality first aid instructor training courses, including advanced first aid knowledge, emergency medical responder training, and instructional skills development, all of which require rigorous assessment.
Our first aid instructor framework is designed to maximize the diverse talents of our instructors and foster a supportive network among them. Experienced front-line instructors are given more opportunities to participate in the planning of training courses and activities. We also encourage all instructors to take part in a wide variety of First Aid Training courses, with the aim of continuously enhancing the quality of training and services. At the same time, this approach helps strengthen the cohesion and sense of belonging among our first aid instructor team within the Hong Kong Society of Professional Medical Care.
Most of the courses and examinations organized by the Hong Kong Society of Professional Medical Care are held at our various training centers. In addition, the Society may arrange for instructors to conduct first aid training at commercial organizations, voluntary groups, and schools as needed. The majority of our courses and examinations are conducted in Cantonese. If you wish to enroll in an English course, please complete the relevant application form and send it to the Society. Arrangements will be made once a sufficient number of applicants is reached.
For information on upcoming Chinese courses, please refer to our course schedule. To enroll in any of our training courses, applicants are required to complete the application form and submit it to the Society either by mail or in person.
